Training My Dog to the PetSafe® Core Bark Collar With Digital Display
Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.
Getting Started
Bark collars are used to control nuisance barking. These collars are very effective when used appropriately, and the dog is trained for success.
- Make sure the collar is fit properly on your dog. Visit our article How To Fit the PetSafe® Core Bark Collar With Digital Display to My Dog for more information.
- Do not leave your dog alone the first few times he receives a static correction.
- The static correction may be surprising or startling at first, causing some dogs to bark more at the initial correction. Try reassuring or calming your dog as they bark, so they realize that it stops when they stop barking.
Consistency
- You must place the bark collar on your dog in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your dog is not wearing the bark collar, he may resume barking, and his learning would suffer a setback.
- You should notice a reduction in your dog’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the bark collar. At this point, it is important to remember that the learning process is still incomplete.
- You may find that a different mode works better for your dog. Visit How To Change Modes on My PetSafe® Core Bark Collar With Digital Display for more information.
- Dogs will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a dog wears a bark collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the bark collar.
Bark-Correction Cycle
On rare occasions, a dog may bark at the correction, causing them to be corrected again, thus beginning a bark-correction cycle. This can happen with a dog that is not familiar with any static training devices.
- If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your dog relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more static correction.
- The small minority of dogs that have this reaction will only have it the first time they wear the bark collar.
