My PetSafe® Basic Dog Trainer Has a Reduced Range

How It Works

The system range is the distance the collar will respond to the remote signal in an area free from obstructions. You may experience slightly reduced range if you are indoors, in a hilly area, or in an area with many obstructions like buildings, vehicles, or dense tree coverage.

Make sure both the collar and remote are fully charged. The collar will indicate a low battery by a flashing red light. The remote will indicate the battery life by the battery icon on the display. For more information on charging, visit How To Charge My PetSafe® Basic Dog Trainer.

Test your remote and collar for each function. Visit How To Test My PetSafe® Basic Dog Trainer.

Test the range. This is best done with two people, one to press and hold the buttons on the remote and another person to hold the collar and confirm it is functioning.

  1. Begin with both people standing about 10 feet apart.
  2. Remote Holder

Using the rocker switch on the right side of the remote, adjust the stimulation level to 0. Hold the remote above your head with your arm outstretched. Press and hold the vibrate/static button (upper button) on the remote.

    Collar Holder

    Confirm the collar is vibrating.
  3. If confirmed, the remote holder can release the button and separate an additional 10 feet.
  4. Repeat steps 2 & 3.

If the system is working, check the collar fit on your dog. For more information, visit How To Fit My PetSafe® Basic Dog Trainer.
