The tools and materials needed to install your PetSafe® SmartDoor™ Connected Pet Door vary based on where you want to install it.
Tools and Materials Needed for Door and Wall Installations
You will need the following tools and materials for all door and wall installations:
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Level
- Scissors
- Tape
- Safety glasses
- Dust mask
- Hearing protection
- Work gloves
- Drill
- ½-inch (12 mm) drill bit
- ⁵⁄₁₆-inch (8 mm) drill bit
- Jigsaw
- Jigsaw blade appropriate for the material you will be cutting (wood, PVC, or metal)
If you are installing the pet door in a door, make sure your jigsaw blade is at least 1 inch longer than the thickness of the door. - #2 Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver
- Exterior grade caulk

- Hammer (optional
- Flat blade (slotted) screwdriver (optional)
- A raised, level surface, such as two sawhorses (optional)

- SmartDoor™ Connected Pet Door Tunnel Extensions(medium or large to match your door size) – The extension tunnel is needed for metal doors thicker than 1 ¾ inches and non-metal doors thicker than 2 ¼ inches.
For wall installations:
- Drill bit long enough to drill all the way through your wall to aid in template placement (diameter not critical)
- Permanent glue
- All-weather tape
- Appropriate hardware for your wall construction (for example, wood screws if attaching to wall studs, toggle bolts if attaching to drywall)
- SmartDoor™ Connected Pet Door Installation Adaptors (medium or large to match your door size), one set
- SmartDoor™ Connected Pet Door Tunnel Extensions (medium or large to match your door size) – You will need enough tunnel extensions to span the thickness of your wall plus 1 ¼ inches. Tools and Materials Needed for Glass Installations (Medium SmartDoor™ Only)
To install the SmartDoor™ in glass (medium SmartDoor™ only), you will need:
- The help of a professional glass worker to prepare a new pre-cut pan of glass (double-paned only) and install it in your home
- Safety glasses
- Work gloves
- #2 Phillips (crosshead) screwdriver
- Exterior-grade caulk
- SmartDoor™ Connected Pet Door Installation Adaptors (medium), one set
