PetSafe® Bark Collar Correction Types Explained: Temperament Learning and Progressive Correction

PetSafe® Brand static bark collars use one of two types of technology to detect and correct a pet’s bark. The two types of correction technology are Progressive Correction and Temperament Learning. Your bark collar uses Temperament Learning technology.

The two correction types are the same in the manner that a bark collar is only capable of one or the other and can’t be changed. They are also the same in the way that they deliver an automatic correction that is not adjustable.

It is important to note that bark collars will not completely eliminate your pet’s barking. Bark collars are designed to reduce nuisance barking.

Progressive Correction

When a collar has Progressive Correction, the collar will start at a level 1. Each time the pet barks within 30 seconds of the previous bark, the collar will correct at the next highest level until the collar tops out at the highest level available(Collars vary with the number of levels available). After the pet remains quiet for 30 seconds, the collar will drop down to level 1. When the pet begins barking again, the collar will climb through the levels once more.

Temperament Learning

Temperament Learning collars are a type of progressive correction and works in much the same way. The collar will start at level 1. Each time the pet barks within 30 seconds of the previous bark, the collar climbs to the next highest level until the collar tops out at its highest level. The difference is here. After the pet remains quiet for 30 seconds, the collar will only drop down 1 level. It learns your pet’s temperament. It remembers which level it took to stop the pet and keep him quiet. When the pet begins to bark again, the collar will pick up at the higher level. This feature is particularly beneficial for the pets that have a higher recognition level.

It is also important to note that if a collar is Temperament Learning, it will also have a programming sequence call the Temperament Learning Reset. This is available in the event you use the collar on more than one pet or in the event a Bark-Correction Cycle has occurred during the training process. Safety Information

Regardless of correction technology a bark collar uses, there will always be a safety shutoff feature. The trigger times may vary slightly from model to model, but they will all stop correcting when the correction is not effective. As a standard example, if the pet barks more than 15 times in 30 seconds the collar will shut off for 3 minutes.
