My PetSafe® Gentle Leader® is Rubbing or Loosening on My Dog

Important Information

Properly sizing and fitting the Gentle Leader® to your dog is imperative to their comfort and successful training. If you are experiencing issues with the straps rubbing or loosening on your dog, it is due to improper fit and/or size.

Check the Fit

Unlike traditional collars, the Gentle Leader® fits high at the very top of the neck against the skull in the back and above the tracheal area in the front. Ensure the straps, buckle, and snap clamp are all properly secured.

When adjusting this style of head collar to fit your dog, the collar strap should be snug enough that you can only fit one finger under the strap when fastened so that it will not easily move around. This will help avoid any situation that may cause the nose strap to rub the sensitive snout area and cause discomfort.

When properly fitted, the Gentle Leader® will look like a “V” with the neck strap high and snug at the back of the head, and the nose loop loose and comfortable, at or just behind the corners of the mouth. Your dog will be able to comfortably perform all normal activities including drinking, eating, carrying toys, and much more.
