How to Train Your Pet to a PetSafe® NanoBark™ Collar

Bark collars are used for controlling nuisance barking. These collars are very effective when used appropriately and the pet is trained for success.

Getting Started

  • Do not leave your pet alone the first few times he receives a static correction.
  • Make sure the collar is fit properly on your pet and wait nearby until he barks. Visit our article How to Fit the PetSafe® NanoBark™ Collar for more information.
  • The static correction may be surprising or startling at first, some pets may bark more at the initial correction. Try reassuring or calming your pet as they bark so they realize that it stops when they stop barking.
  • You should notice a reduction in your pet’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the bark collar. At this point, it is important to remember that the learning process is still incomplete.
  • Pets will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a pet wears the bark collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the bark collar.
  • You must place the bark collar on your pet in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your pet is not wearing the bark collar, he may resume barking and his learning would suffer a setback.

Bark-Correction Cycle

On rare occasions, a pet may get into a bark-correction cycle. This can happen with a pet that is not familiar with any static training devices.

  • If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your pet relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more static stimulation.
  • The small minority of pets that have this reaction will only have it the first time they wear the bark collar.
  • The collar utilizes Temperament Learning. Visit How to Reset the PetSafe® NanoBark™ Collar to Level One if your pet experiences a bark–correction cycle.
