How To Train My Pet to the PetSafe® Brand Stay & Play® Compact Wireless Fence Phase 3: Distractions

Avoid leaving the collar on your pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.

Training your pet to a PetSafe® Stay & Play® Fence is essential for successful integration into your and your pet’s lives.

You will need to complete three 10–15-minute sessions on separate days for each phase. You will also need to have toys and treats available for praise at each session.

If your pet shows signs of stress, increase the amount of playtime in the pet area. Signs of stress can include ears tucked, tail down, cowering, pulling on the leash, or stiffening. Discontinue the training session when your pet is no longer a willing participant.

Offer a minor distraction. This can be another person walking by outside of the boundary zone.

If the pet does not react or attempt to leave the boundary area, offer your pet praise.

If you notice a reaction or an attempt to leave the boundary area, allow the pet to return to the pet area.

Repeat the same process while gradually increasing the distraction level.

Spend at least five minutes of playtime within 10 feet of the boundary flags at the end of each training session.

Remove the collar after every training session.

Once your pet no longer responds to distractions and respects the boundary, proceed to the next phase of training. Visit How To Train My Pet to the PetSafe® Brand Stay & Play® Compact Wireless Fence Phase 4: Unleashed Supervision.
