How to Train My Dog with the PetSafe® Spray Bark Collar

Bark collars are used for controlling nuisance barking. These collars are very effective when used appropriately and the pet is trained for success.

Important Information

  • To ensure effectiveness, avoid letting your dog wear the collar with an empty cartridge.
  • Before playing with your dog, remove the Spray Bark Collar. The activity may cause your dog to bark, which could lead to him associating the play with the burst of spray.

Getting Started

Bark-Correction Cycle

The spray may be surprising or startling at first, some pets may bark more at the initial correction. Try reassuring or calming your pet as they bark so they realize that it stops when they stop barking.

On rare occasions, a pet may get into a Bark-Correction Cycle. This can happen with a pet that is not familiar with any training devices.

If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your pet relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more spray bursts.

The small minority of dogs that have this reaction should only have it the first time they wear the Bark Collar.

Consistency

You should notice a reduction in your pet’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the bark collar. At this point, it is important to remember that the learning process is still incomplete.

Pets will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a pet wears the bark collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the bark collar.

You must place the bark collar on your pet in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your pet is not wearing the bark collar, he may resume barking and his learning would suffer a setback.

Avoid leaving the collar on the dog for more than 12 hours per day.
