How To Train My Dog to the PetSafe® Pawz Away® 2.0 Indoor Wireless Pet Barrier

Important Information

Training your dog to the system is integral to the successful use of a Pawz Away® barrier system. Training will require consistency and patience.

  • Keep each session to about 10-15 minutes, with no more than 2–3 sessions per day.
  • Each dog will differ when training. Some learn rather quickly, and some require more time. Stay patient.
  • If your dog shows signs of stress, slow down the training schedule, add additional training days or increase the amount of playtime with them in the areas they are allowed.
  • Common stress signals include your dog pulling on the leash toward the house, ears tucked or pulled back, tail down or tucked between the legs, body lowered, nervous/frantic movement or stiffening of their body, lip-licking or yawning.
  • Discontinue training early when your dog is no longer a willing participant.

Be sure to never force or entice your dog to enter the off-limits zone.

Avoid leaving the collar on your dog for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears irritated.

Ensure the collar is charged and powered on. To power it on, press the power button for 1 second until the light is green, then release. The collar will tone and the light will remain solid green for 5 seconds. Then the light will indicate the battery status by blinking either a green or red light once every 5 seconds. If the light is red, charge the collar fully before continuing. For more information, visit How To Charge My PetSafe® Pawz Away® 2.0 Collar.

One Finger Between Contact Point And Neck

Properly fit the collar on your dog. Ensure the collar is tight enough that you can fit only one finger between a Contact Point and your dog’s neck. For more information, visit How To Fit the PetSafe® Pawz Away® 2.0 Collar on My Dog.

Attach Collar And Leash

Place a second, non-metal collar on your dog above the Pawz Away® collar and attach a leash to it.

Walk Towards Barrier

Walk your dog toward the off-limits zone. As soon as you hear the tone or see that your dog is receiving a static correction, gently guide your dog away from the off-limits zone and back into the safe zone and reward your dog with praise and/or a treat. Be sure to never force or entice your dog to enter the off-limits zone.

The collar uses Variable Pulse™ technology which starts on the lowest static correction level and pulses in progressively increasing levels of correction strength to the maximum level as the collar stays in the area, up to 15 seconds.

Repeat this training over several sessions until your dog resists the off-limits zone. Some dogs may learn quickly, others may need more training sessions.

Keep each session to about 10-15 minutes, with no more than 2–3 sessions per day. Once your dog begins to resist the off-limits zone, proceed to Step 6.

Roam Free

Once your dog begins to resist the off-limits zone, remove the leash and allow your dog to roam free and explore their new boundaries.

If the indoor base puck is in an area where your dog can potentially bolt through, it is best to put a physical barrier in the area as well (such as baby gate in a doorway or staircase) for training purposes. When your dog actively avoids the off-limits zone, the physical barrier can be removed.
