How To Train My Dog to a PetSafe® NanoBark™ 2.0 Collar

Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If you notice redness or irritation, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.

Bark collars are used for controlling nuisance barking. These collars are very effective when used appropriately, and the dog is trained for success.

Getting Started

  • Do not leave your dog alone the first few times he receives a static correction.
  • Make sure the collar fits properly on your dog and wait nearby until he barks. Visit our article How To Fit My PetSafe® NanoBark™ 2.0 Collar for more information.
  • Your dog may be surprised or startled by the static correction at first. Some dogs may bark more at the initial correction. Try reassuring or calming your dog as they bark, so they realize that it stops when they stop barking.
  • You should notice a reduction in your dog’s barking within the first couple of days that he wears the bark collar. At this point, it is important to remember that the learning process is still incomplete.
  • Dogs will “test” the new learning experience and will increase their attempts to bark. This usually occurs during the second week a dog wears the bark collar. If this does occur, remain consistent and do not alter your use of the bark collar.
  • You must place the bark collar on your dog in every situation when you expect him to be quiet. If your dog is not wearing the bark collar, he may resume barking, and his learning would suffer a setback.

On rare occasions, a dog may get into a bark-correction-bark-correction cycle. This can happen with a dog that is not familiar with any static training devices. As a safety feature, if your dog barks 15 times or more within 80 seconds, the bark collar will automatically time out for 30 seconds.

  • If this happens, reassure your dog with calm, soothing tones. As your dog relaxes, he will understand that if he becomes quiet, he will not receive more static stimulation.
  • The small minority of dogs that have this reaction will only have it the first time they wear the Bark Collar.
