How To Train My Dog to a PetSafe® Guardian® GPS 2.0 Dog Fence + Tracking Phase 1: Explore the Pet Area

Training your dog to use the Guardian® GPS 2.0 Dog Fence + Tracking Fence is necessary to successfully contain your dog. This process should not be rushed. Patience, consistency, and a minimum time commitment of 15 days are required. Each dog is different and may require more time, but less time is not ideal. There should be 2-3 training sessions daily, lasting 10-15 minutes each. Dogs can be sensitive, so it is important to keep a positive attitude. If you become frustrated, so will your dog.

Before You Begin:

You will need to place a regular collar or harness on your dog in addition to the GPS Collar. You will also need a leash and some of your dog’s favorite treats.

Never attach a leash to the Guardian® GPS + Tracking collar.

Phase 1: Explore the Pet Area Day 1

This step is teaching your dog what they are supposed to do when they hear the beep.

Set the collar to Tone and Vibration only. Visit How To Change the Correction Levels on My PetSafe® Guardian® GPS 2.0 Dog Fence + Tracking Collar for assistance changing the correction level.

Attach the leash to the dog’s regular collar, and with treats on hand, allow your dog to explore the pet area.

Let your dog cross the boundary and hear the tone from the collar, then invite your pet to come back into the pet area. As soon as he returns, give him lots of treats and praise.

For the best results, train your dog on the portion of your boundary that has the clearest view of the sky. Approach the boundary in a wide zig-zag pattern (moving side to side, parallel, and gradually moving closer) to ensure you have control over whether your dog receives a warning tone or a static correction.

Please note that boundaries created using GPS technology are affected by several factors, such as satellite positions and weather; your dog will be warned and corrected in a general area, not at an exact location, every time.

Repeat these steps for the remainder of the training session.

After your training sessions, remove the collar and provide your dog with praise and playtime.

Once your dog begins to show signs of returning to the pet area when they hear the collar beep, move to How To Train My Dog to a PetSafe® Guardian® GPS 2.0 Dog Fence + Tracking Phase 2: Learn To Avoid the Boundary Area.
