How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 3
Important Information
- Proper dog training is essential to the success of the collar.
- If the dog shows signs of stress, slow down the training schedule, add additional training days, or increase the amount of playtime with the pet in the pet area. Common stress signals include the dog pulling on the leash toward the house, ears tucked or pulled back, tail down or tucked between the legs, body lowered, nervous/frantic movement or stiffening of the dog’s body, lip-licking or yawning.
Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.
Always remove the collar from the dog before entering the home or a vehicle to prevent unwanted collar corrections.
Distractions
Attach a leash to a second, non-metallic collar placed above the fence collar on the dog.
Set the fence collar to the same correction level that was used in phase 2 and have treats available for praise.
Present a minor distraction outside the boundary zone, like a person walking by. Offer praise and their favorite treat if your dog does not react to the distraction.
If you notice a reaction, allow your dog into the boundary zone to receive correction and then return to the pet area.
Complete 2 or 3 training sessions for about 10-15 minutes each.
Once your dog consistently avoids the boundary zone, proceed to How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 4.
After a Training Session
- Spend at least five minutes of playtime within the boundary at the end of each training session.
- Remove the training collar after each session.
