How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 2
Important Information
- Proper dog training is essential to the success of the collar.
- If the dog shows signs of stress, slow down the training schedule, add additional training days, or increase the amount of playtime with the pet in the pet area. Common stress signals include the dog pulling on the leash toward the house, ears tucked or pulled back, tail down or tucked between the legs, body lowered, nervous/frantic movement or stiffening of the dog’s body, lip-licking or yawning.
Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.
Always remove the collar from the dog before entering the home or a vehicle to prevent unwanted collar corrections.
Phase 2 Days 2-4: Introduction to Static Correction

Set the fence collar to the lowest level of correction. For more information on changing correction levels, visit How To Change the Correction Level on My PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence.
Attach a leash to a second, non-metallic collar placed above the fence collar on the dog.
- Placing a metallic collar can carry the correction and interfere with the delivery of the correction.
- Place the regular collar above the fence collar so that the fence collar remains in place during training.
Walk slowly to the boundary zone and watch for slight reactions to the correction. A slight reaction could be the ears perking up, a twitch of the skin or a head turn.
- If there is no reaction to the correction, verify the collar fits properly.
- The collar should fit snugly, yet loose enough to allow one finger to fit between a Contact Point and the dog’s neck. Always place the fence collar on the dog with the PetSafe® logo right side up. For more information on fit, visit How To Fit My PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence Collar
- If the collar is properly fit and there is still no reaction, test the collar for correction. Visit How To Test My PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence for Correction for more information.
- If the test determines the collar is correcting, increase the correction level. For more information on changing correction levels, visit How To Change the Correction Level on My PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence.
Walk the dog to the boundary zone, then back into the middle of the yard and provide positive encouragement, such as their favorite treat and praise.
- Do this until the end of the session or the dog resists going to the boundary zone.
Complete 2 or 3 training sessions for about 10-15 minutes each.
Once your dog consistently avoids the boundary zone, proceed to How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 3.
After a Training Session
- Spend at least five minutes of playtime within the boundary at the end of each training session.
- Remove the training collar after each session.
