How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 1

Important Information

  • Proper dog training is essential to the success of the collar.
  • If the dog shows signs of stress, slow down the training schedule, add additional training days, or increase the amount of playtime with the pet in the pet area. Common stress signals include the dog pulling on the leash toward the house, ears tucked or pulled back, tail down or tucked between the legs, body lowered, nervous/frantic movement or stiffening of the dog’s body, lip-licking or yawning.

Avoid leaving the collar on the pet for more than 12 hours per day to prevent skin irritation. If redness or irritation is observed, discontinue use of the product until the skin no longer appears to be irritated.

Always remove the collar from the dog before entering the home or a vehicle to prevent unwanted collar corrections.

Phase 1 Day 1: Boundary Awareness

No Static

Start with the collar set to tone only. Visit How To Change the Correction Level on My PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence for help setting the collar correction level.

Attach a leash to a second, non-metallic collar placed above the training collar on the dog and allow them to explore the pet area.

  • A leash should never be attached to an electronic collar as it causes the Contact Points to press into the throat and cause irritation.
  • Placing a standard collar above the electronic collar keeps the electronic collar in place during the training session.

Let them cross the boundary and hear the tone from the collar, then ask them to return to the pet area and reward them with their favorite treat.

  • Aim to teach the dog that being inside the pet area is rewarding while being outside is not.

Complete 2 or 3 training sessions of about 10-15 minutes each.

  • Do not try to do too much too quickly. More frequent short sessions are better than less frequent longer sessions.
  • The trainer must keep an upbeat mood during training sessions, as dogs can sense emotions.
  • Discontinue the training sessions early if the dog is no longer a willing participant.

Once your dog consistently avoids the boundary zone, proceed to How To Train My Dog on the PetSafe® GPS Customizable Dog Fence: Phase 2.

After a Training Session

  • Spend at least five minutes of playtime within the boundary at the end of each training session.
  • Remove the training collar after each session.
