How to Make Your PetSafe® ScoopFree® Litter Last Longer

Location and Moisture Control

Placing the litter box in a high humidity area, may result in a shorter life span of the litter. The litter works best if placed AWAY from areas of high humidity such as bathrooms, showers, and basements. Moisture in the air can shorten the life of the litter and disposable tray. Place the ScoopFree® litter box in a room with moving air to pull away moisture, such as a room with a fan.

In high-humidity locations, a dehumidifier can help your litter last longer.

Time of Year

Different seasons have different levels of temperature and humidity. You may find the litter lasts longer in dryer months or have a reduced life in wet or humid months.

Type of Litter

Only use the ScoopFree® litter. The litter is specially designed to work with ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes. The litter absorbs urine and dries solid waste to remove odors without clumping. DO NOT use any type of clay or clumping litter. Litter that is not PetSafe® Brand is not recommended for use with the ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Boxes.

Habits

Stir the litter to help distribute the saturated litter. This will help if your cat consistently uses the same spot of the litter tray or does not dig or bury their waste.

Be sure to mix in the litter from behind the rake and along the sides of the litter box, but do not mix in litter from under the waste trap.

If your ScoopFree model has a health counter, it keeps track of your cat’s litter box activity. This can also help you better understand how often your cat is using the litter box. If you feel that the tray did not last as long as expected, be sure to check the health counter. You may have a cat that uses the litter box more frequently which would result in needing to change the tray more often.

It is recommended to have litter boxes equal to the number of cats plus one, even if they are standard litter boxes and not ScoopFree®. Multiple cats can use ScoopFree® but you will need to replace trays more often.

Age

It is recommended to use PetSafe® ScoopFree® litter box with cats that are older than 6 months. Kittens under 6 months of age may have runny or softer waste than mature cats. This means more litter must absorb more moisture than with older cats. Softer waste may also result in a messier rake.

Cats older than 10 years of age tend to use the litter box more often, resulting in more waste.

Size/Weight

Larger animals need to consume more food, which in return creates more waste. If you have a larger breed of cat like a Maine Coon, you may find the waste trap fills quicker than expected. The ScoopFree® is best for cats under 15lbs.

Health

Cats with diabetes, kidney and thyroid problems may result in shorter tray life due to increased litter pan usage.

The health counter keeps track of your cat’s litter box activity to help monitor your cat’s health. Irregularities in how frequently your cat uses the litter box might be a sign of a problem. Share your cat’s litter box usage with your veterinarian.

Type of Food

Cats with diets high in crude fiber and ash content will produce more solid waste, which may prematurely fill the waste trap. Consider changing your cat’s diet to a food with no byproducts or fillers.

Cats who are consuming more food than recommended, may produce excessive waste. Be sure to refer to the nutritional guide on your cat’s food or consult a veterinarian for recommended feeding.
