How Do I Find and Repair a Partial Wire Break in My PetSafe® In-Ground Fence™ Wire

A partial break in the wire will prevent your system from functioning properly. A partial break occurs when the insulation of the wire is damaged but not necessarily severed. In most instances, it is a nick of the insulation in an area where the wire is exposed. Partial breaks will not typically trigger the loop light to go out but may cause the collar to correct in the safe area or fail to correct your pet where it should.

To locate the partial break, follow the steps below:

  • Visually inspect your splices and high-traffic areas for wire separation or damage. Examples: Where the wire meets the edges of the driveway, the twisted wire, areas where yard work has recently occurred, areas where the wire is exposed, areas in which the ground has been disturbed.
  • Use the Divide Method to locate the area in which the break has occurred.
  • After locating the break, cut the damaged section out and splice in a new section of boundary wire. The damaged portion MUST be removed from the ground so that it does not interfere with the signal.

Don’t forget to purchase additional wire and splice kits rated for outdoor, in-ground use to repair damaged wire. They can be purchased together HERE.

Though a wire break locator is available for purchase, be aware that a wire break locator will NOT locate a partial break.
